Night of wrestling best yet for sold-out crowd

WE Wrestle Series Four at Showgrounds Park Event Centre on Saturday was the best smackdown yet, say wrestlers, organisers and fans of the annual event.

An event organiser and floor manager Nikki Kennedy described the event as “intense and high-impact”.

“It was full on and exciting, a great family night out. Everybody was cheering and loving it, especially when the Executioner came in and took out a few wrestlers by chucking them over the top rope and through a table, including triple crown champion El Nino.”

In a shock ending, Deathrow was allowed last-minute entry into the free-for-all and snatched the 20-man Royal Rumble title from wrestling babyface Coyote with his signature “lethal injection” move.

He will go on for a shot at next year’s WE heavyweight title.

The wrestling involved a tag team event at the start and then a one on one no-DQ match before the royal rumble.

Twenty-one wrestlers from Gisborne donned their macho masks to help support families who are wrestling against drugs, alcohol abuse and family violence.

“We are in our fourth year and we are getting bigger and better. At our inaugural event we had 220 people attend. This has now grown to 1500 people,” said Youth Force Charitable Trust chairman, Pastor Scott Cowan.

The event also celebrates youth week. It was sold out by Wednesday.

To check out the event, see the House of Breakthrough and Youth Force websites or the Facebook page We Wrestle – RWE.

It will also screen on the TV2 programme IamTV on Saturday June 18.

The House of Breakthrough Church helped fund and support the event, along with Gisborne’s Equippers Church.

Profits from merchandising, door sales and the new collectable wrestling card sets will go back into the running of the event, to make it even bigger and better next year.
