We Wrestle is an exciting youth and family focused event run annually in the Gisborne community. We Wrestle began in 2007 with a vision to support and strengthen young people through the challenges they face in life. Using wrestling to draw people to the event, not only makes for an entertaining night, but also acts as an effective metaphor to encourage young people to channel their energy and aggression, toward wrestling against anything that would rob them of a better future. The wrestling matches are supported by positive messages from prominent community members, performances from local and national talent and information about support services and networks for young people and families in our community. For the We Wrestle team, it is not just about a one night event, it is about changing the course of the future for many of our regions youth, one life at a time, day after day, week after week, year after year.

DRUG FREE
Our current focus is keeping our young people drug free and this is promoted in event marketing and all throughout the event itself. All wrestlers and volunteers must be good role models in this area to be a part . A goal we have for the future is to build a ‘drug free’ mentoring programme for young people in our community. We are also looking to work with and lend our support to other organisations that are working for the drug free cause.
We Wrestle is brought to you by:
Youth Force Tairawhiti
Youth Force Tairawhiti Charitable Trust was set up in 2005 with the purpose of providing relevant, preventative, life-skills education to young people between the ages of 12 and 24 years old inclusive, that;
- Inspires young people to give their best
- Improves the spiritual, mental, emotional, social and physical quality of life for young people in Te Tairawhiti
- Encourages a ‘can do’ attitude
- Encourages the values of integrity, respect, honour and commitment
Youth Force Tairawhiti has run annual youth camps on the East Coast since 2007 and is always on the look-out for other youth projects to support. We Wrestle is seen as the perfect opportunity for Youth Force Tairawhiti to partner with the Revolution team from House of Breakthrough to provide for and support our regions youth.
Revolution
Revolution Youth Development is locally based and run through House of Breakthrough. The programmes promote the growth and development of youth through ensuring a wide support network in all areas of social development. Through these programmes we aim to facilitate the development of strong young people who are in a better position to contribute back into the community.
Revolution runs a number of programmes. These include:
Revolution Friday Nights: Open to high school age youth from 6-8pm at the House of Breakthrough every Friday night except the school holidays. Participate in fun activities, make friends and hear positive messages.
Revolution Sunday Mornings: We run two weekly Sunday morning programmes as part of our weekly church service. One programme is for school years 7-9 and the other is for school years 10+ and anyone in these age groups can attend. These programmes are aimed at the spiritual development of our young people.
Revolution Mentoring: Small group mentoring for young people that regularly attend our Revolution programmes. Mentoring is aimed at building leadership, spiritual development, building strong friendships and having fun.
Invasion: Invasion is a monthly Sunday night service for young adults and youth at the House of Breakthrough. It’s run by young people for young people but is open to everyone that can handle it.
Camps and conferences: Revolution works with Youth Force Tairawhiti to deliver an annual summer youth camp on the East Coast. Revolution also takes a large contingent of young people to a relevant youth conference in Auckland at least once a year.
Over the past few years we have had youth from the NZ Police Young Offenders Programme and the Children’s Health Camp Mentoring Programme attending Revolution. Revolution has also worked alongside many other community organisations to develop and promote a Youth Week coordination team and youth council for our regions youth. We have also partnered with the police to provide events such as a Students Against Driving Drunk night and a UV rage.
