HISTORY

2014 (Series VI)

RWE returned to the showgrounds event centre for the first time in two years in front of a capacity house of 1,600 screaming fans. The opening contest saw the RWE tag team titles ripped from the Hill Billy Kids by the Kaos Krew, a new tag team on the scene, they dethroned The Hill Billy Kids with assistance from The Death Dealers. In the second contest of the evening, Mikey Legend made El Santo Loco submit to the figure four leglock to win the RWE Heavyweight Championship, and dethrone El Santo Loco from the title following a six year reign. However, following the match, it was revealed by ringside commentator Josh Calles, that El Santo Loco in the match was in fact an imposter. El Santo Loco had been locked in the bathroom prior to the match and replaced by the notorious Shadow. In the main event, Hill Billy Kid’s Billy Boy Blazey paid The Death Dealers back by eliminating The Executioner to win the 20 man Royal Rumble. The Hill Billy Kids celebrated to end the night.

2012 (Series V)

RWE The Elimination Match was held before an unprecedented 1,600 fans as the Legends’ League kicked off proceedings. Legend selected Iceman from four Legends Leage finalists to be his new tag team partner, after Iceman savagely attacked Naati in the final selection. Next was the Vegas Street Fight as a number of wrestlers made their way to the ring to compete in this prestigious match. But only one man could leave triumphant as King Kolo won his first Vegas Street Fight by defeating Rick Damage in the final bout of the match, The next match was to determine the number 1 contendership to the RWE Tag Team Championship as Mikey Legend and Iceman defeated The Hill Billy Kids when Styley Cyrus interfered on behalf of Iceman and Mikey Legend. Reptilla won the next match against Styley Cyrus when The Hill Billy Kids helped Reptilla get an upset win over Cyrus. In the main event, the team of Las Hermanos wrestled The Death Dealers in a 4 on 4 elimination match to determine who the winner of their feud would be. The end of the match saw a lone El Santo Loco stand face-to-face with all four members of The Death Dealers. Through sheer willpower and the roar of the crowd, El Santo Loco defeated all four members of The Death Dealers to win The Elimination Match main event, and crown Las Hermanos as the winners of this five year feud.

2011 (Series IV)

The Showgrounds Events Centre was once again packed to capacity in 2011. Days prior to the event, 1500 tickets were sold out as Gisborne was keen to see what We Wrestle would bring to the ring after a massive 2010 event. We Wrestle Series IV was the biggest and most successful smackdown yet. The event featured a one on one match between the impressive Paco and new boy GTI with the victory going Paco’s way and a tag team match between rising stars the Valentine Brothers and unlikely duo Mikey Legend and Johnny South who had thrown ‘team’ out the window by the end of a match that went to the boys in pink. 2011 also saw the return of the Royal Rumble in spectacular fashion with the victory in the 21 man event being snatched from Coyote (who had been in the ring since the beginning) by a surprise entrant in the form of Death Row, a menacing addition to the Death Dealers from 2010. This set the scene for a spectacular final showdown in 2012, the results of which only time will tell. Every year more and more crazy characters take up the challenge to wrestle with the best. 2011 was no exception with the addition of Mighty Marcus, Reptilla, Bobby Franklin, Styley Cyrus, The Shadow, Billy Boy Blazey, Uncle Ra, The Prophet and Ivan Ivanovich.

2010 (Series III)

In 2009 We Wrestle upped its game in a big way, moving out to the Showground’s Events Centre and pushing attendance to 1000. 2010 was even crazier with 1300 people packing the place out, a cage, an ambulance and a challenge to fathers to up their game as well. 2010 saw the return of a number of old favourites and the arrival of some new champions in the form of the flowing haired, stretchy pants wearing ‘Ultimate Maori Warrior’, who showed us how to get the crowd going and how not to wear your stretchy pants in public, and the shirt ripping, leotard wearing new hermano, Coyote who won one for the underdog and made wearing a leotard a cool thing to do. The Vegas fight showcased the talents of some well established characters, culminating in the line that every school kid was repeating the next day, ‘shut your traps!’ being delivered to the crowd after the short lived victory of Johnny South. The much hoped for victory of good over evil finally came to pass, with Los Hermanos securing the heavyweight tag team championship against the dirty dealing Death Dealers who had recently recruited the menacing Death Row, in We Wrestle’s very first, but by no means last, cage match. After some initial dramas, the Mexicans sent the crowd wild with an 11th hour ambulance entrance and some impressive aerial skills particularly a memorable backflip from the top of the cage that no doubt had some keen little primary schoolers jumping off the arms of the couch. But like any worthwhile community event the real impact is in the message. We Wrestle 2010 laid down a challenge to Tairawhiti fathers to be the champions for their children, their families and their community. Tonnes of positive feedback came in for both the quality of the event and for the timeliness of the message.

2009 (Series II)

2009 saw the event move from the Revolution youth room with a capacity of approximately 250, to the 1000 seat Showgrounds Event Centre, which was filled to capacity. The night featured the one on one ‘Dirty South’ fight won by hillbilly on a Lawnmower and crowd favourite Bubba Kong over his southern compatriot but by no means friend, Johnny South. The night also featured Gisborne’s first Royal Rumble won by new wrestler on the block, Kid Chaos who much to the disappointment of the crowd turned to the dark side and joined the Death Dealers who had been defeated in 2008. 2009 was the Death Dealers year with them taking the Heavyweight Tag Team Title off favourites Los Hermanos by some say less than honourable means in the main event. We Wrestle 2009 also introduced a number of exciting new wrestlers including Victor Valentine, King Kolo, Paco, Mikey Legend and Rick Damage.

We Wrestle 2009 highlighted the issues of drug abuse and suicide. Consistent messages leading up to and throughout the event encouraged young people to fight against these issues in their own lives and in modern youth culture.

2008 (Series I)

In 2008 Gisborne got its first taste of Revolution Wrestling Entertainment. Big lights, big fights and big characters came together for the inaugural ‘We Wrestle’, an event highlighting the issues that young people wrestle with in our community. The first of the fights saw Gisborne’s own version of popular professional wrestlers, The Rock and Batista go head to head in an exhibition match ending with the smooth talking rock taking the win. The next fight was the championship event with the high flying luchador styled El Santo Loco and brother El Nino known together as Los Hermanos facing the powerhouse duo The Death Dealers, dirty fighting brothers The Executioner and Big Judge. After a gruelling ten minutes of kicks, punches, moonsaults, clotheslines and choke slams, Los Hermanos walked away with the Tag Team Title and the Death Dealers walked away with nothing but bruises and something to prove if the two teams were to ever meet again. This rivalry, first witnessed in 2008 would become the feature of many a We Wrestle to come. Despite a power outage due to an ambitious use of the power supply, the event was a huge success with a maximum capacity crowd hearing a positive message while being entertained by the high energy wrestling matches. From small beginnings, God only knew how big We Wrestle was to grow to in the future.
